Rep. Cartwright to Host Academy Day

Saturday, June 8, 2013 - 11:00am to 1:30pm
97 Bochiccio Boulevard
Moscow, PA 18444
United States

Washington – U.S. Representatives Matt Cartwright and Tom Marino have announced that they are hosting a joint Academy Day at North Pocono High School.   The event is set to take place on Saturday, June 8th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is open to all interested students and their families.

The informational session will include representatives from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY; United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD; United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO; United States Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT; and United States Merchant Marine Academy, King's Point, NY.

“The young men and women from my district pursuing service academy nominations are the best and brightest in our schools and communities, and I applaud their interest in serving our country so honorably.  It is one of my greatest privileges as a congressman to meet with these future leaders and encourage them on this journey.  Their selflessness, courage, and sacrifice will lead them to a life of true patriotism and excellence,” Marino said.

Cartwright added, “Throughout our nation’s history, U.S. Service Academies have played an important role in preparing young people for service to our country.  Pennsylvania never has been short of patriotic young men and women willing to step forward and answer the call of duty.  It is my honor to help them take advantage of the opportunities provided by these institutions because preparing tomorrow's generation of leaders is critical to our success in the future.”

The session will include an overview of Academy life as well as an opportunity to meet with representatives to discuss requirements for admission.  Academy nominations are available only through a member of Congress, the Vice President or the President.  After receiving a nomination, students then must be accepted by the individual academy for final admission.  The Coast Guard academy, however, has a more open process and operates like a traditional college.
