Cartwright Requests Hearing Concerning Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline Proposal

Aug 12, 2014
Press Release

Pottsville, PA – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright sent a letter to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chairman Cheryl LaFleur requesting a public hearing to discuss the Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline.

The proposed Atlantic Sunrise Project is an expansion of the Transco pipeline which currently transports natural gas from production areas to utility companies and power plants located throughout the northeastern and southeastern U.S.  The operator of the Transco Pipeline, Williams Gas and Energy, is in the preliminary stages of the project that would expand the already functioning Transco pipeline by adding an extension that will route through Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional district via western Schuylkill County.

In his letter Cartwright stated, “Western Schuylkill County is home to many multi-generational farming families that rely on their land and natural resources every day to operate.  I believe it is in the best interest of both FERC and Williams Energy and Gas to work with these local communities, listen to their concerns, address their concerns, and not keep them in the dark.”

FERC has held public hearings in both Dauphin and Lebanon Counties to allow residents the opportunity to discuss their concerns with the pipeline proposal.
