Cartwright Announces Prevention & Safety Funds to Bethlehem City Fire Department

Grant Allows for Purchase of Vital Home Safety Equipment

Bethlehem, PA , August 10, 2018

Bethlehem, PA – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright (D-17) announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded the City of Bethlehem Fire Department a $15,734 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant (FP&S). The funds will be distributed via the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Funds will be used to purchase 700 smoke alarms as well as 5,000 handouts and 4,000 door hangers, in Spanish and English, with instructions on how obtain smoke alarm installation. Their goal is to reduce the incidence of residential fire-related injuries and deaths.

“Our firefighters work tirelessly every day to protect our communities and keep our families safe,” said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the House Appropriations Committee and Congressional Fire Services Caucus.  “This grant will help the fire company inform and empower residents as well as increase their connections and visibility in the communities they serve.”

The FP&S Grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) and support projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards. The primary goal is to reduce injury and prevent death among high-risk populations.
