Cartwright Announces $16,191 DHS Grant for Schuylkill Hose Co. No. 2

Schuylkill Haven, PA– Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) awarded Schuylkill Hose Co. No. 2 with an $16,191 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG). The funds will be distributed via the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Schuylkill Hose Co. No. 2 will use funds to purchase a Washer/Extractor/Dryer, appliances used to wash and dry turnout gear, a system of outer protective clothing. During a fire, car accident, or other emergency event, protective gear could be exposed to life-threatening chemicals, blood, body fluids, or particulate matter. Proper cleaning of personal protective equipment is necessary for the safety of our first responders and the public at large.

“I am a strong supporter of programs like the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which has been a critical resource for the men and women of our fire and rescue units who selflessly put their lives in harm’s way,” said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the House Appropriations Committee. “It is our duty to help first responders have the resources they need to protect themselves and the community.”

The purpose of the AFG is to award competitive grants directly to fire departments to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of first-responder personnel.  Since 2001, the AFG program has provided approximately $7.1 billion in grants to first-responder organizations to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training.
