Congressman Cartwright Announces 2017 Service Academy Nominations for Luzerne County

Today, Congressman Matt Cartwright proudly announced the nomination of 2 students from Luzerne County for appointments to the United States Service Academies. Each student nominated by Congressman Cartwright will go through the academies' competitive application process. If offered an appointment, the students will join their respective academy's class of 2021. “It is my distinguished honor to nominate these exceptional young men as candidates for appointment to our esteemed United States Service Academies,” Cartwright said. “Each student nominated is among the best and brightest of northeastern Pennsylvania, and they represent the next generation of great American leaders.” Cartwright continued, “I want to thank these outstanding young adults for their willingness to commit to service to their country. They give me hope that our best days are surely ahead.” Nicholas Cannell, Exeter, PA Nicholas Cannell is a senior at Wyoming Area Secondary Center in Exeter, PA. Nicholas is the son of Raymond and Tami Cannell. Nicholas is an Eagle Scout and a volunteer firefighter in West Pittston. He is a member of the marching and concert bands and a member of the Northeastern Youth Wind Ensemble at Marywood University. Nicholas has been nominated to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY. Jordan Washko, Avoca, PA Jordan is a senior at Pittston Area Senior High School in Pittston, PA. Jordan is the son of Robert and Lisa Washko. Jordan has a black belt in Tang Soo Do, finished 3rd at the Reebok Spartan Race for his age bracket, and is a member of the National Honor Society. He was also selected to take part in Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre and Pennsylvania Keystone Boys State. Jordan has been nominated to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, as well as the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. |
