Cartwright announces over $4 million in HHS Funds to Scranton Lackawanna Head Start

Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that Scranton Lackawanna Head Start received $4,205,297 in federal funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). These funds are used for the continuation of high quality, comprehensive, early childhood education.

Scranton Lackawanna Head Start programs provide children with education services focused on early learning, health, and family well-being. These programs promote children’s growth and development, and give parents an opportunity to become actively engaged in their education.

“These federal funds are an important investment in our community,” said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the Appropriations Committee. “I am a proud proponent of Head Start.  A strong educational foundation not only brightens each child’s future potential, it is also vital to strengthening our economy.”

Head Start is a federal program created in 1965 to address the educational and developmental needs of low-income, pre-school children. Head Start’s comprehensive service system provides social, nutritional, and educational services for thousands of children and their families across the United States. Head Start emphasizes the role of parents as their child's first and most important teacher.
