Cartwright Announces $1.2 Million Department of Homeland Security SAFER Grant for Wilkes-Barre City Fire DepartmentThe grant will allow the City of Wilkes-Barre Fire Department to hire 8 additional firemen, return one additional engine to service, and raise staffing levels on all shifts. Cartwright wrote a letter of support for the grant in September 2013 requesting the monetary amount that was awarded.
Cartwright Introduces Legislation to Improve Services for Individuals with Autism Spectrum DisordersU.S. Congressman Matt Cartwright introduced the Autism Services and Workforce Acceleration Act. The legislation would authorize federal funding for enhanced treatment, support, research, and services for individuals with Autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Specifically, the legislation would establish a couple of projects to provide an array of comprehensive services to those with ASD.
“Our first priority must be economic opportunity...July will mark five years since the federal minimum wage was last raised, that’s why I support legislation introduced by Senator Tom Harkin and Representative George Miller that would mean a minimum wage of $10.10 by 2016."
Late last week Rep. Cartwright spoke on the house floor about the need to unemployment benefits immediately for the 6,000+ families in northeastern PA that expired at the end of 2013. The first priority for the 2nd session of the 113th Congress should be an extension of federal emergency unemployment insurance for people still searching for work.

Washington – Today, U.S. Congressman Matt Cartwright announced that the U.S. Department of Interior has made $52.3 million available for Pennsylvania in 2014– the largest amount made available to any State – to reclaim abandoned coal mines. Funds will be distributed via the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE).
