News from the Recovery: NEPA's Restaurant Industry

Northeastern Pennsylvania’s restaurants are vital businesses in our community and our economy, but they were pushed to the brink by the pandemic. That's why I fought to include relief funding specifically for restaurants and hospitality companies in the American Rescue Plan so they could make it through to better days.

In our area, more than 200 restaurants received $28.1 million to help them adapt during COVID-19, stay afloat and keep people employed. Support for these and many other businesses through the American Rescue Plan has played a key role in driving our economic recovery over the past few months.

Since the beginning of this year, NEPA's leisure and hospitality industry has recovered over 40,000 jobs.

Postal Service Issues in NEPA

I'm still hearing from many of you that you're experiencing poor service from USPS. Whether it is delayed mail deliveries, misdelivered packages or low staffing at local post offices, it's unacceptable. I appreciate everyone who has contacted me to let me know where the issues are. If you haven't done so yet and are having problems as well, I hope you'll take a moment to complete my survey. Soon, I'll be having a meeting with local and regional USPS managers to ensure they are working to correct the situation.

Fighting Climate Change is a Job-Creation Opportunity

Climate change is a major challenge for Northeastern Pennsylvania, our nation and our world -- but if we address it the right way, it will also be a major job-creation opportunity.

In the U.S. House, we're working on legislation that will not only ensure a healthier planet for future generations, but also create millions of good paying jobs now and lower Americans’ energy costs.

Rep. Cartwright discusses job-creating investments in building a cleaner economy and fighting climate change that he is working on in Congress

We’re talking about creating jobs by:

Modernizing our electric grid and facilitating the expansion of renewable energy;
Strengthening infrastructure like levees to protect against floods and other extreme weather; and
Cleaning up the more than 300 abandoned mine land sites still un-reclaimed in Northeastern Pennsylvania, addressing the pollution they cause and paving the way for new development – a priority for our area I fought to include in these plans.

These are smart investments that will position Northeastern Pennsylvania for continued economic growth, strengthen our infrastructure and ensure cleaner air and water.

Fighting climate change is not a binary choice between protecting our planet and economic growth. We can do both. I'm working on getting these investments across the finish line because they are good for our environment, our health and our economy.
