Cartwright Announces $10 Million Transit Award to the City of Hazleton

U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright (PA-08) today announced that the City of Hazleton received a $10 million federal grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Buses and Bus Facilities Program for site improvements and new buses.

“Modern and reliable public transit is critical, especially for frontline workers who rely on it to get to their jobs during this pandemic,” said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the House Appropriations Committee. “I will always be a strong advocate for funding our transportation infrastructure across Northeastern Pennsylvania because it creates jobs, keeps people working and supports our businesses of all sizes.”

Hazleton Public Transit (HPT) is a service of the City of Hazleton's Department of Public Services and operates bus routes in the City of Hazleton and surrounding townships and boroughs.

The FTA Buses and Bus Facilities Program makes federal resources available to states and direct recipients to replace, rehabilitate and purchase buses and related equipment as well as to construct bus-related facilities including technological changes or innovations to modify low or no emission vehicles or facilities. Funding is provided through formula allocations and competitive grants.

Transit services supported by FTA span many groups and provide wide-ranging benefits. Since 1964, FTA has partnered with state and local governments to create and enhance public transportation systems, investing more than $12 billion annually to support and expand public rail, bus, trolley, ferry and other transit services. That investment has helped modernize public transportation and extended service into small cities and rural communities that previously lacked transit options.
