The Congressional Art Competition is a nationally prestigious competition sponsored by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize and encourage young artistic talent. Since this competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. The competition is open to all high school students in Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District, and the overall winner of the district competition, chosen by a panel of judges, will be invited to attend a winner's ceremony in D.C. They will also have their artwork displayed on House.gov's Congressional Art Competition page and hung in the U.S. Capitol for an entire year. Learn more about the Congressional Art Competition here.
Each Spring, my office invites high school students, grades 9-12, to submit up to two of their favorite pieces of artwork. Acceptable mediums for the 2024 competition include paintings, drawings, collages, prints, mixed media, computer-generated art or photographs. Please note that artwork must be two-dimensional and doesn't need to be framed. All submissions must adhere to the policy of the House Office Building Commission. In accordance
with this policy, submissions depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy, or a sensationalistic or gruesome nature are not allowed.
My office is now accepting submissions for the 2024 Congressional Art Competition, with the final day to hand in artwork to one of my district offices being Wednesday, April 10. Last year, 76 students submitted 87 works of art from ten regional high schools that were put on display at the Everhart Museum in Scranton. This year, our in-person reception for our young artists and their families will be held at the Everhart Museum on Friday, April 26, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., where I will announce first place, second place, third place and honorable mention. All submissions to this year's competition will be shown in the exhibit at the Everhart Museum, which will be open to the public from Saturday, April 27, until Sunday, May 5.
