Cartwright announces $32,175 National Science Foundation Grant to Lafayette College

Northampton, PA – Today, Congressman Matt Cartwright announced that Lafayette College received a $32,175 federal grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). This grant will provide support for graduate students and young researchers from the U.S. interested in attending the Between Geometry and Relativity summer school or conference.

The Between Geometry and Relativity summer school and conference will be held at the Erwin Schrödinger Institute (ESI) in Vienna, Austria. The program will bring together doctoral students, promising young researchers, and leading experts to discuss spectacular recent developments in the nexus of geometric analysis and general relativity, to assess new avenues for investigations, to support existing collaborations, and to promote new ones.

“I am a strong advocate of the National Science Foundation,” said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS) Subcommittee. “We need federal grant opportunities like this to help quality institutions in the 17th District, like Lafayette College, create unique Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math learning experiences. Programs like Between Geometry and Relativity create the engagement and discovery necessary for economic growth in this country.”

Lafayette College, founded in 1826, is a tradition-rich liberal arts college in Easton, PA and recently held a ground-breaking for a new Integrated Science Center. “As we seek to find solutions to the world’s most challenging problems, it is critically important to support the advancement of doctoral students and promising young researchers in the STEM fields,” says Alison R. Byerly, president of Lafayette College. “As Lafayette continues its efforts to advance STEM education, we are so pleased to partner with the National Science Foundation in creating this opportunity for young researchers and educators from all over this nation to attend the Erwin Schrödinger Institute’s Between Geometry and Relativity, a premier international program, and benefit from the wisdom and insights from leading experts in their field. I am grateful for the efforts of Justin Corvino, Lafayette professor of mathematics, in crafting this proposal.”
