Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center received $1,894,759 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The funds will go towards renovations to the floors, bathrooms, nurse stations, and cameras at the veterans’ center. The Gino J. Merli Veterans’ Center, built in 1994, is one of six veterans’ homes operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

“We have a growing number of military veterans and their families in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and we owe them a debt of gratitude,” said Rep. Cartwright. “These funds will allow the Gino J. Merli Veterans’ Center to complete necessary updates that will make the facility safer and better able to assist our nation’s veterans.”

"It is an honor to serve those who have served our great nation," said Brig. Gen. Tony Carrelli, Pennsylvania's adjutant general. "This grant will help increase the overall home-like setting for our veterans, their families, and employees.  It will also help improve the safety and security of those who live, work, and visit here."

The 196-bed Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center provides a broad spectrum of health care and related services to veterans and their eligible spouses who are disabled, chronically ill, or in need of specialized care. They assist residents in functioning independently and at their optimal level. The facility includes a chapel, pharmacy, barber and beautician service, dining rooms, and a multi-purpose room for large gatherings.
