Cartwright Votes against Farm Bill due to $20 Billion in SNAP Cuts

Today the U.S. House of Representatives failed to pass the Federal Agricultural Reform and Risk Act, commonly known as the Farm Bill, by a vote of 234-195.  Below is U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright’s statement on the action.

“While the Farm Bill had many provisions that would have streamlined and improved our nation’s agriculture policy, I could not vote in favor of a $20 billion cut to the SNAP Program.  These drastic cuts would have resulted in 2 million of the nation’s poorest being kicked off of the program, leave more than 210,000 children without school breakfast or lunch, and push more families into poverty.  That is amoral and not the American way! We must not balance our budget on the backs of hungry children.

The Farm Bill has an impact not only on Pennsylvania, but all over this country and Congress owes it to the American people to get the job done.”
