Cartwright Statement on Trump-Putin Helsinki News Conference

U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright released the following statement regarding President Trump’s meeting in Helsinki with Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Friday, special counsel Robert Mueller released grand jury indictments for 12 Russian military intelligence officials, for a myriad of alleged crimes.

“I don’t understand the President’s behavior Monday at the Helsinki press conference. It was unequivocally an indefensible performance,” Rep. Cartwright said. “We must be forceful in confronting Russia and the continuing threat they pose to the security of our national elections.”

“Defending American national sovereignty and providing strong, unified leadership in the face of domestic attacks are the most important jobs for any president. Partisan politics should never get in the way. I proudly stand with our intelligence agencies and trust their capabilities, as they are the best fact-finders the world has to offer,” Rep. Cartwright added.

“Additionally, I call on Congress to pass legislation that protects the important work of Robert Mueller’s investigation and also conduct the appropriate oversight – including investigations and subpoenas, if necessary -- that comes with our job description. We must make a forceful point that we will rigorously investigate any attack on our democracy and vigorously defend our democratic process,” Rep. Cartwright said.
