Cartwright Slams Senate Republicans for Inaction on Government Funding Bills, Votes to Pass Stopgap Measure to Avert Shutdown

U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright today criticized the Senate for failing to take any action on fiscal year 2021 funding legislation, requiring Congress to pass a continuing resolution (CR) to prevent a federal government shutdown when fiscal year 2020 funding runs out after September 30. To date, the House Appropriations Committee advanced all 12 of its funding bills out of committee and passed 10 through the House. Because of the Senate’s inaction, the House today passed a CR to keep the government funded through December 11.

“On the House Appropriations Committee, we worked hard for months to fulfill our duties and pass government funding bills that invest in the American people. But Mitch McConnell and the do-nothing Senate Republicans have yet to advance even a single bill out of a single subcommittee, with just eight days until the fiscal year ends,” said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the Appropriations Committee. “By failing to complete this most basic responsibility, while continuing to block over 300 bills that passed the House with Democratic and Republican support, they have proven that they have no interest in governing. The House has done what we need to keep the government open with a stopgap bill, but the Senate needs to get to work.”
