Cartwright announces over $6.3 Million in HUD Funds to Wilkes-Barre and Luzerne County

Wilkes Barre, PA – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded grants in the amount of $1,639,569 to the city of Wilkes-Barre and $4,721,553 to Luzerne County.

The HUD grants awarded include Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), which helps state and local governments develop viable urban communities; the Home Investment Partnerships (HOME), which helps expand the supply of affordable housing to low- and very low-income families; and the Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG), which helps homeless individuals and families living on the street.

“These grants are an investment in the future of our community. They fund programs that meet the needs and priorities of our neighborhoods, remove blight, and attract businesses,” said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the House Appropriations Committee. “I will continue to do all I can to bring vital federal funds to Northeastern Pennsylvania.”

HUD's mission is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all. HUD is working to strengthen the housing market to bolster the economy and protect consumers; meet the need for quality affordable rental homes; utilize housing as a platform for improving quality of life; and build inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination.
