Cartwright Statement on Ensuring Accountability for Attack on Democracy

Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright (PA-08) made the following statement:

“There is no question that the president incited the attack on our Capitol that attempted to stop the peaceful transfer of power. His unfounded claims of election fraud and incendiary rally resulted in a threat to a core Constitutional process and cannot go unanswered. Since it is clear by now that the President will not do the right thing and resign, I urge Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment. If it becomes necessary, I will support articles of impeachment this week. This is a Constitutional emergency that should be taken very seriously. We need to make clear that presidents cannot use their power or influence to attack our democracy.”

Cartwright’s statement today follows his call for the President to resign on January 9. He has cosponsored the article of impeachment led by U.S. Representatives David Cicilline (RI-01), Ted Lieu (CA-33) and Jamie Raskin (MD-08).
