Charles Hamberger, Hometown Hero, Will Be Rep. Cartwright’s Guest at State of the Union

Congressman Matt Cartwright announced today that his virtual State of the Union Guest for Tuesday’s presidential joint session address will be Master Sergeant (Ret.) Charles Hamberger of Monroe County, Pennsylvania.

Hamberger joined the Army in 1963 and served in Korea as an air observer, and then in the air cavalry in Vietnam in an exploratory division. He fought in the Battle of Ia Drang, one of the fierce battles of the Vietnam War, in Landing Zone X-Ray. At one point, then-Private Hamberger advanced on foot under heavy enemy fire that had pinned down in his platoon and led an attack that stopped the enemy from flanking his company.

He later joined the Army Reserve and became an artillery forward observer and instructor, training soldiers for combat and building character, unit harmony and battle skills needed for success. He compiled a remarkable service record of over three decades before retiring.

Today, as a distinguished veteran, Master Sergeant (Ret.) Hamberger serves as commander of American Legion Post 903 and the Monroe County veterans honor guard. He’s also developing a military museum and veterans’ groups operation center in Mt. Pocono, Pennsylvania.

“For a lifetime of service to his country and fellow soldiers and veterans, Charles Hamberger is truly a ‘hometown hero,’” said Congressman Cartwright. “I’m proud to have him as my State of the Union special guest.”
