Cartwright Calls Upon Speaker to Avert a Government Shutdown

U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright (PA-08) joined 97 Members of the New Democrat Coalition in a letter sent to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy calling on him to urgently advance bipartisan government funding bills similar to those advanced by the Senate and consistent with the bipartisan debt ceiling agreement that Congress and the administration negotiated in May.

In the letter, Congressman Cartwright and his colleagues urged the Speaker to take swift action to avert a government shutdown by passing bipartisan legislation.

On Release of the Letter, Congressman Cartwright also released the following statement:

“A federal government shutdown would have devastating consequences, including undermining national security and forcing servicemembers around the world to work without pay.

Working families and seniors in Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional district can’t afford a shutdown. Kids and families will be cut off from food assistance, critical services like food inspections will be interrupted, small businesses will be hurt, and emergency response efforts will be thwarted should additional catastrophic disasters occur.

I’m committed to working with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to advance the bipartisan legislation required to prevent a costly and harmful shutdown. I’ll do everything in my power to keep the government running and working without interruption for hardworking families, seniors, and members of the military in Northeast Pennsylvania.

We should reject outlier demands and find common ground. The American people deserve a government that works and that stays at work.”
