The proposed Scranton-to-New York City passenger train, which would include stops in the Poconos, took its most significant step toward happening Tuesday, with a federal railroad agency commiting money for its planning for the first time. In a joint statement, U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-8, Moosic, and U.S. Sen. Bob Casey said the Federal Railroad Administration has accepted the project into its Corridor Identification and Development Program “with the goal of reestablishing direct passenger rail service” between the cities. “I am thrilled to make this long-awaited announcement,” Cartwright said in a statement. “This is a significant milestone and represents years of dedicated efforts to restore passenger rail service, which will contribute to our region’s economic growth and vitality.” The proposed line would include stops in Monroe County at East Stroudsburg and Mount Pocono.
