Cartwright Announces Nearly $283K in HUD Funds for Northeastern Pennsylvania Organizations to Address Homelessness

Today, U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded a total of $282,873 via its Continuum of Care (CoC) Program to two local organizations in northeastern Pennsylvania – the Commission on Economic Opportunity and the United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania – to address homelessness.

The Commission on Economic Opportunity, whose offices are located in Luzerne County, PA, received $44,387 and the United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania, whose headquarters is in Scranton, PA, received $238,486.

“Addressing the issue of homelessness is a major public health concern,” said Rep. Cartwright.  “This past year, more than 15,000 people in Pennsylvania were without access to a house, one of our most basic needs.  I am glad that the recipients of these funds will continue to provide invaluable housing services to vulnerable Pennsylvanians in our local communities.”

The CoC Program provides federal funding to nonprofit organizations and local government agencies in an effort to rehouse homeless individuals, increase access to mainstream programs for the homeless, and promote self-sufficiency.
