Local fire crews awarded FEMA funding

Scranton Times-Tribune

Over $2 million in federal grants will help firefighters across the area battle inflation, along with fires.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, awarded the federal cash to firefighters and first responders at 20 fire departments in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne and Monroe counties.

The funds, announced by U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-8, Moosic, came through FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters, or AFG, and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, or SAFER, grant initiatives.

The four counties are permitted to spend the money on needs including protective personal equipment, hoses, radios, appliances, medical exams and emergency medical service gear, such as defibrillators.
