Rep. Cartwright Amendment to Restore Funding for NASA Climate Monitoring System Included in Commerce-Justice-Science Appropriations Bill

U.S. Congressman Matt Cartwright announced successful passage of his amendment to the House FY 2018 Commerce-Justice-Science appropriations bill that will restore necessary funding for NASA’s critical Climate Monitoring System (CMS).  This system develops methods for monitoring, reporting, and verifying the measurement of harmful global warming emissions.

President Trump’s administration has eliminated future funding for NASA’s CMS, meaning no new projects could be started, and this amendment will reverse that decision.

“The Climate Monitoring System strengthens our country’s ability to track flows of carbon through our land, oceans, and atmosphere. CMS’ coordinating faculties create a better understanding of carbon dioxide and methane levels, and thereby assist us to prepare for natural disasters that result from rising concentrations of greenhouse gases,” said Rep. Cartwright.

“You can’t manage what you don’t measure,” Cartwright added.  “A lack of management would not only jeopardize taxpayers’ wallets, but their safety as well. A comprehensive understanding of the greenhouse gas levels is essential to ensuring our nation’s safety and prosperity.”
