Washington, DC,
April 22, 2013
Today Rep. Matt Cartwright announced that Nazareth Area Middle School has been recognized as a Department of Education Green Ribbon School. The recognition award honors schools that are exemplary in reducing environmental impact and costs; improving the health and wellness of students and staff; and providing effective environmental and sustainability education, which incorporates STEM, civic skills and green career pathways. “I congratulate Nazareth Area Middle School on their recognition and their leadership on this important issue. The school and the community have gone to great lengths to create a green school building which benefits the children, school employees, the community and the environment,” said Cartwright. Nazareth Area Middle School is one of only five schools to be recognized across the state; among the other four schools recognized is the Broughal Community Middle School in Bethlehem, PA. “Today’s honorees are modeling a comprehensive approach to being green,” said Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan. “They are demonstrating ways schools can simultaneously cut costs; improve health, performance and equity; and provide an education geared toward the jobs of the future. In fact, the selected districts are saving millions of dollars as a result of their greening efforts. And the great thing is that the resources these honorees are using are available for free to all schools." |
