Today U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright announced a U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Grant in the amount of $131,007.00 has been awarded to the Wilkes-Barre Housing Authority.

The grant is to be used to assist veterans in need with shelter and health care in a cooperative effort between HUD, local housing authorities and Veterans Affairs.

“At a time when 529,000 and 840,000 veterans are homeless at some time during the year and, on any given night, more than 300,000 veterans are living on the streets or in shelters in the U.S., we must act,” said Cartwright.  “While I disagree with the sequester cuts that have been levied against local housing authorities, this grant is a good step in the right direction, and more needs to be done to help those who have sacrificed on behalf of our nation and all those in need.”

The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program combines Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance for homeless Veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).  VA provides the support services for participating Veterans at VA medical centers (VAMCs) and community-based outreach clinics.

Cartwright was sworn into Congress on January 3, 2013.
