Thieves have been targeting U.S. Postal Service mailboxes throughout the area and statewide looking for checks and money, and a local business owner said she was a victim of this fraud. Village Pet Supplies owner Brenda Bartlett said she dropped three checks totaling $6,000 in the mailbox near her Hanover Twp. business in the Hanover Mall on the Sans Souci Parkway to pay bills. U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-8, Moosic, recently spoke to the chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations during a hearing in Philadelphia about recent increases in mail theft and crime. He also asked that a drop in the U.S. Postal Service’s mail delivery performance should be examined. Over the last two years, he said his office has handled a record number of constituent calls and casework requests for assistance with their mail and package delivery. “Hundreds of constituents have called into my office, written letters, responded to my online survey and sent emails to express their concerns about USPS,” Cartwright said. “We have heard horror stories from constituents who are told by their local post offices that first class mail is going unsorted and that there aren’t enough carriers to cover all the routes, resulting in astonishing delays in delivery.” |
