Wilkes-Barre, Pittston to receive COPS grants to hire more police

Wilkes-Barre City is getting $500,000 in federal dollars to hire four more police officers, while Pittston City is getting $275,000 to hire two new cops, boosting the rosters to some of the highest levels ever.

U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-8, Moosic, announced the grant funding Wednesday during a news conference at Wilkes-Barre City Police Headquarters.

The funding is the result of a grant through the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program.

 

Cartwright is chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies that funds the Justice Department.
