Luzerne County fire companies awarded $681,000 in FEMA grants

“We’re lucky to have such capable and dedicated first responders who are always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty,” Cartwright said.

Luzerne County fire departments are getting $681,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighter Grant program, U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright announced Wednesday.

The grants include:

 
  • Plains Twp. will receive $46,000 to purchase a self-contained breathing apparatus compressor and fill system.
  • Jenkins Twp. will receive $49,000 to install a source-capture diesel exhaust extraction system; Kunkle Fire Company in Dallas will receive $95,000 to install a source-capture diesel extraction system.
  • Glen Lyon-Alden Volunteer Hose Company in Newport Twp. will receive $65,000 to install a source capture diesel exhaust extraction system.
  • Pittston Twp. Volunteer Fire Department will receive $159,000 to purchase self-contained breathing apparatuses.
  • Mountain Top Hose Company No. 1 will receive $82,000 to purchase mobile and portable radios.
  • Avoca Fire Department will receive $117,000 to purchase self-contained breathing apparatuses.
  • Hughestown Hose Company No. 1 will receive $66,000 to install a source capture exhaust extraction system.
