Today, Congressman Matt Cartwright (PA-08) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to approve an agreement to prevent a rail strike that includes an additional provision to increase the number of paid sick days for rail workers.

“Workers’ rights are the pillars of a strong American middle class, especially in Northeastern Pennsylvania. While a voluntary agreement with the four holdout railroad unions would have been preferred, a national rail strike would prove devastating to our economy and therefore must be prevented.

The strike-averting legislation I voted for today includes provisions for paid sick leave, a key priority for rail workers. At a time when the rail industry is making record profits, it’s unacceptable that rail workers are allotted zero guaranteed paid sick days. This critical legislation, which received bipartisan support in the House, demonstrates to American families our commitment to protecting their financial futures while safeguarding workers’ rights.”
