Hemp Engine to Steer Pennsylvania Toward Bio-Based Economy

The wheels are in motion for industrial hemp’s new driving force.

Launched July 7, the Pennsylvania Industrial Hemp Engine Development Project is a partnership led by Vytal Plant Science Research, a nonprofit biotech company, and Penn State.

A $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation is funding the objective — build a sustainable supply chain of industrial hemp to meet growing demand for bio-based products.

“Pennsylvania can benefit by being a hub of hemp development and research,” said Cartwright, D-Pa. “It has a bright future, not only in Pennsylvania, but in the whole world.”

“You know, everything you make out of plastic you could also make from hemp,” he added. “And weaning ourselves off plastic in this world is kind of a priority.”
