A major project is underway in the borough of Exeter after an $8.7 million loan was approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The investment will provide separation of the storm and sanitary sewer systems along Schooley and Wyoming Avenues in the Borough.

The sewer system in Exeter, like many throughout Luzerne country, is outdated, some are between 70 and 100 years old, built at the turn of the last century.

“Terracotta pipes can fall apart eventually, and it interrupts the flow, and you don’t know that’s going to happen until it’s backing up into your basement,” said Bob Morgan, state director of USDA rural development.

“It’s a $10 million combination loan and grants to make repairs that they have been needing to make these repairs ever since I’ve been in office,” said Congressman Matt Cartwright.

“And they have been doing it with duct tape and bailing wire making do, and that’s no good, with ought to do a proper job,” said Cartwright.

Congressman Matt Cartwright says the Wyoming Avenue Sewer Improvement Project will bring many construction jobs to the area.
