Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright (PA-08) sent a letter to National Park Service (NPS) and PennDOT officials, requesting their attendance at a special meeting on Jan. 17th to discuss a three-mile stretch of Route 611 in the Delaware Water Gap area that remains closed after a rockslide in December of 2022.

“The year anniversary of the closure of Route 611 at the Northampton-Monroe County border passed in early December, and yet there is still no indication of when this vital artery will be reopened,” Cartwright penned in the letter to Christopher J. Kufro, PennDOT District Executive, and Doyle W. Sapp, Superintendent of the Delaware Water Gap National Park and Recreation Area.  

“Businesses are suffering, commuters are frustrated, and the surrounding community is looking for answers when it comes to the project’s prolonged delay,” Cartwright continued.

The meeting is being coordinated with the offices of State Senator Rosemary Brown and State Representative Tarah Probst, who are also eager for answers.

“Our intention is to convene an open discussion on how we can mitigate the challenges the National Park Service and PennDOT are facing when it comes to reopening Route 611 and devising a cooperative strategy between both agencies that will provide relief to the people we serve,” Cartwright wrote.
