Cartwright Spearheads Meeting to Address Prolonged Route 611 Closure and Releases Official Statement on Next Steps

Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright (PA-08) issued the following statement after calling together a special meeting between regional leaders and National Park Service and PennDOT officials to discuss reopening Route 611 in the Delaware Water Gap area that remains closed after a rockslide in December of 2022:

“Reopening this three-mile stretch of Route 611 is a crucial issue that will only be solved through interagency coordination. While today’s conversation was a positive first step, this is an extremely complicated project and there is still more work to be done. I am grateful to the public officials who took part in today’s meeting and hopeful that our working collaboration will speed this project along.”

In addition to U.S. Rep. Cartwright, attendees at this afternoon’s meeting included U.S. Rep. Susan Wild; Kennedy O’Dell, Appropriations and Economic Development Director from the office of Senator Bob Casey Jr.; Pennsylvania State Senator Rosemary Brown and Joe Kelly, Chief of Staff for State Senator Lisa Boscola; Pennsylvania State Representative Ann Flood and Erin DaRosa, Chief of Staff for State Rep. Tarah Probst; Delaware Water Gap Borough Mayor Larry Freshcorn; Portland Borough Mayor Heather Fischer; Christopher J. Kufro, PennDOT District Executive, and Doyle W. Sapp, Superintendent of the Delaware Water Gap National Park and Recreation Area.

Cartwright requested PennDOT and the National Park Service attend a follow-up meeting in February to report back on their efforts.
