$600,000 on the way for domestic violence victims

Ninety percent of domestic violence victims are women. Ten percent are men.

Fifty white apron-donning domestic violence advocates from WRC were sprinkled throughout the community last weekend, raising funds for all of them, regardless of gender.

The acronym means “Women’s Resource Center,” but is in the process of being changed to just WRC, with the tagline, “We Respect and Care," to be "much more inclusive," Peg Ruddy, the executive director, explained. 

On Thursday, state Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-8, Moosic, announced that a $600,000 windfall in the form of federal funding was awarded to WRC of Scranton from the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women. 

“Leaving an abusive situation takes incredible courage, and I am so glad that Northeastern Pennsylvanians faced with that decision have a safe place to land,” said Cartwright.
