Luzerne County Head Start received a $4.69 million federal funding grant this week, according to U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-8, Moosic.

The grant, through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will provide 50% of the funding for the agency’s annual operations, according to Lindsey Fredericks, a Head Start community advocate.

The agency provides assistance to hundreds of children from birth to age 3 as part of its Early Head Start program, as well as hundreds of children of preschool age, from 3 to 5, in the Head Start program, Fredericks said.

Head Start is a federally funded program created in 1965. It provides early childhood education and services to low-income children and families. Eligibility is based mostly on income.

The grant will allow the agency “to provide high-quality, comprehensive, early childhood education for children in Luzerne and Wyoming counties,” according to a news release issued by Cartwright’s office.

Luzerne County Head Start operates more than a dozen centers in Luzerne and Wyoming counties.
