Congressman Cartwright Announces 2018 Service Academy Nominations for Lackawanna County

Lackawanna County, PA – Today, Congressman Matt Cartwright proudly announced the students from Lackawanna County nominated for appointments to attend the United States Service Academies. Each student nominated by Congressman Cartwright will go through the academies' competitive application process. If offered an appointment, the students will join their respective academy's Class of 2023. “It is my distinguished honor to nominate these exceptional young women and men as candidates for appointment to our esteemed United States Service Academies,” Cartwright said. “Each student nominated is among the best and brightest of Northeastern Pennsylvania, and they represent the next generation of great American leaders.” Cartwright continued, “I want to thank these outstanding young adults for their willingness to commit to serving their country. They give me hope that our best days are surely ahead.” Gianna Calciano, Dunmore, PA Gianna is the daughter of Genaro and Lisa Calciano. Throughout her high school career at Holy Cross High School, Gianna has been recognized for her achievements both in and out of the classroom. She has been named to the Distinguished Honor Roll and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has been a standout athlete as a member of the basketball, softball, tennis, cross county, and track teams. Gianna is also an active member of the Chess Club, IHM Scholars, and Foreign Language Club. She is a four-year Student Council member, finishing her senior year as the vice president. Gianna has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. Abigail Pidgeon, Archbald, PA Abigail is the daughter of Sarah Pidgeon and currently attends the Naval Academy Preparatory School. Throughout her high school career at Valley View High School, Abigail was recognized for her achievements both in and out of the classroom. She was a member of the National Honor Society and on the Distinguished Honor Roll. Abigail participated in basketball, track, marching band, and Student Council. Abigail has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. Alexandria Carter, Dickson City, PA Alexandria is the daughter of Alisa Carter and a senior at Holy Cross High School. Throughout her high school career, Alexandria has been recognized for her achievements both in and out of the classroom. She has been named to the Distinguished Honor Roll, is a member of the National Honor Society, and participates in the IHM Dual Enrollment Program. Alexandria is an active member of the softball team and SADD. She also has a part time job and logged over 165 hours of community service. Alexandria has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. Dylan Rowland, Carbondale, PA Dylan is the son of Michael and Jacqueline Rowland and a senior at Carbondale Area Junior/Senior High School. Throughout his high school career, Dylan has been recognized for his achievements both in and out of the classroom. He is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, SADD, Spanish Club, the National Honor Society, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Dylan is also a member of the varsity track and field and soccer teams and has earned his Eagle Scout rank. Dylan has been nominated to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY and the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO. Nicholas Vadella, Carbondale, PA Nicholas is the son of Joseph and Ann Vadella and a senior at Carbondale Area Junior/Senior High School. Throughout his high school career, Nicholas has been recognized for his achievements both in and out of the classroom. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has been named to the Distinguished Honor Roll. He is a member of the Spanish Club, SADD, Student Council, and concert band. Nicholas also has letters in football, baseball, and track and field. Nicholas has been nominated to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. Cameron Lloyd, Chesapeake, VA Cameron is the son of LCDR David and Jacqueline Lloyd originally from Moosic, PA. Throughout his high school career at Norfolk Academy in Virginia where is father is stationed with the United States Navy, Cameron has been recognized for his achievements both in and out of the classroom. He is a Renaissance Scholar and has been consistently named to the honor roll. Cameron is a member of the sailing, indoor track, and rowing teams as well as the Outdoors Club. Cameron has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. |
