Congressman Cartwright Announces 2018 Service Academy Nominations for Monroe County

Monroe County, PA – Today, Congressman Matt Cartwright proudly announced the students from Monroe County nominated for appointments to attend the United States Service Academies.  Each student nominated by Congressman Cartwright will go through the academies' competitive application process.  If offered an appointment, the students will join their respective academy's Class of 2023.

“It is my distinguished honor to nominate these exceptional young men as candidates for appointment to our esteemed United States Service Academies,” Cartwright said.  “Each student nominated is among the best and brightest of Northeastern Pennsylvania, and they represent the next generation of great American leaders.”

Cartwright continued, “I want to thank these outstanding young adults for their willingness to commit to serving their country.  They give me hope that our best days are surely ahead.”
 
Cartwright’s Class of 2023 U.S. Service Academy nominees from Monroe County include:

Benjamin Salsovic, Stroudsburg, PA

Benjamin is the son of Michael Salsovic and Jennifer Swartzentruber and a senior at Stroudsburg High School. Throughout his high school career, Benjamin has been recognized for his achievements both in and out of the classroom. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America, as well as the varsity track and field team. Benjamin is an assistant senior patrol leader in the Boy Scouts of America and United States Naval Sea Cadet. Benjamin has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD.

Logan Mackes, Kresgeville, PA

Logan is the son of Greg and Shannon Mackes. Throughout his high school career at Pleasant Valley High School, Logan has been recognized for his achievements both in and out of the classroom. He is a member of the National Honor Society, varsity soccer team, and captain of the FC Pocono Elite soccer team. Logan also serves as class treasurer and organized numerous charitable events, including a shoe drive for victims of Hurricane Harvey. Logan has been nominated to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY.

Pierce O’Dowd, Stroudsburg, PA

Pierce is the son of Padraig and Geraldine O’Dowd and currently attends the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering. Throughout his high school career at Stroudsburg High School, Pierce has been recognized for his achievements both in and out of the classroom. He is in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Pierce also participated in the marching band, cross country, Scholastic Scrimmage, and Model Congress. Pierce has been nominated to the United States Air Force at Colorado Springs, CO.
