Scranton, PA – Today, U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded a continuation grant worth $3,656,425.00 to the Scranton/Lackawanna Human Development Agency, Inc. (SLHDA). SLHDA is an umbrella agency dedicated to serving economically disadvantaged individuals within Lackawanna County and surrounding counties. These funds will be utilized for the organization’s Head Start programs.

Lackawanna County Head Start programs provide over 1,569 children with education services focused on early learning, health, and family well-being. These programs promote children’s growth and development, and give parents an opportunity to become actively engaged in their education.

”These federal funds are an important investment in our community,” said Rep. Cartwright.  “I am a proud proponent of Head Start, as a strong educational foundation is both good for children themselves and vital to strengthening our economy.”

Head Start is a national program created in 1965 to address the educational and developmental needs of low-income, pre-school children. Head Start’s comprehensive service system provides social, nutritional, and educational services for thousands of children and their families across the United States.
