Congressman Cartwright Announces 2017 Service Academy Nominations for Lackawanna County

Today, Congressman Matt Cartwright proudly announced the nomination of 4 students from Lackawanna County for appointments to the United States Service Academies.  Each student nominated by Congressman Cartwright will go through the academies' competitive application process.  If offered an appointment, the students will join their respective academy's class of 2021.

“It is my distinguished honor to nominate these exceptional young men and women as candidates for appointment to our esteemed United States Service Academies,” Cartwright said.  “Each student nominated is among the best and brightest of northeastern Pennsylvania, and they represent the next generation of great American leaders.”

Cartwright continued, “I want to thank these outstanding young adults for their willingness to commit to service to their country.  They give me hope that our best days are surely ahead.”
 
Cartwright’s class of 2021 U.S. Service Academy nominees from Lackawanna County include:

Jake Grady, Scranton, PA                

Jake is a senior at Scranton Preparatory School in Scranton, PA. Jake is the son of Eugene and Lori Grady. Jake is a member of the Business Leadership Club, Spanish Club, Suave Club, Archery Club, and the Mathlete Team. He is also a member of the wrestling team, the basketball team, football team, and captain of the baseball team. Jake is a member of the National Honor Society, and a Scranton Prep Ignatian Scholar. Jake has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD.

Gerardo Marengo, Scranton, PA

Gerardo is a senior at Scranton High School in Scranton, PA. Gerardo is the son of Luis and Maribel Marengo. At school, Gerardo is a member of the marching band, the jazz band, and was inducted into the Junior National Honor Society. He is an active member of the church and its youth group, Boy Scout Troop 16, and has held the position of vice-president for the marching band. Geraldo has been nominated to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY.

Monica Seamon, Scranton, PA

Monica is a 2016 graduate of Holy Cross High School and currently enrolled at Schreiner University in Kerrville, TX. Monica is the daughter of Lisa and James Seamon. She was a varsity athlete on the high school track & field team, a volunteer at Waverly Community Center, Moses Taylor Hospital, and United Cerebral Palsy Center, and an Ambassador Against Drug and Alcohol Award recipient. She is currently the freshman senator for Schreiner University student government and is an MS1 Army ROTC Cadet. Monica has been nominated to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, as well as the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY. 

Jude Wheeler, Scranton, PA

Jude is a senior at West Scranton High School in Scranton, PA. Jude is the son of George and Nicole Wheeler. Jude is a member of the Students Against Destructive Decisions, the Drama Club, the Chorus Club, and the Red Cross Club. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and has earned the 2016 Bochicchio Sports Character Award. Jude has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, as well as the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs,
