Wilkes-Barre, PA- On Friday, Congressman Matt Cartwright (PA-o8) announced $486,615 in federal funding for Wilkes University to acquire high-performance scientific technology for research and instruction.

The funds, which will be awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), will be used to build a high-performance computing cluster on campus, which will help students get hands-on training across multiple fields of study, including biology, chemistry, geology, and environmental science. This equipment will support visualization and scientific modeling; it will also allow students and staff to complete data-intensive and memory-intensive projects, which require high-performance software and equipment.

“Wilkes University is doing fantastic work preparing our students in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and this grant will enhance that work tremendously,” said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the House Appropriations Committee. “These are the kinds of investments our community needs to keep pace with industry.”

The NSF is a federal agency created to support research, innovation, and discovery in mathematics, computer sciences, and other fields. It funds nearly a quarter of all federally-supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities.
