Cartwright Announces $60,000 Grant for Lackawanna College Nursing Program
Hawley, PA,
July 13, 2020
U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright (PA-08) today announced a $60,000 grant to Lackawanna College through the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to support nursing education at the school's Lake Region Center campus. By 2024, the grant-supported program will enhance educational opportunities for prospective and current nurses, directly supporting the region's healthcare providers. Providing robust funding for ARC is consistently one of Cartwright’s priorities as a member of the House Appropriations Committee. For fiscal year 2020, he fought successfully to fund the commission with $175 million. “The coronavirus has highlighted a need to invest in growing the ranks of our health care professionals,” Cartwright said. “We were experiencing a nursing shortage before the pandemic. This program can help us meet our future health care needs and offer job training close to home. I commend Lackawanna College for their efforts to be responsive to the community and the NEPA Alliance for supporting this workforce initiative through the ARC application process.” “We are thrilled to receive this grant to establish a nursing education program at our Lake Region Center,” said Dr. Jill Murray, President of Lackawanna College. “This support will give students the education they need to be successful and make significant contributions within their communities.” “NEPA Alliance is proud to have assisted Lackawanna College with this ARC grant. We are committed to helping fund programs like this LPN degree program that will train people for jobs in Northeastern PA. We thank Congressman Cartwright for his continued support for funding for the Appalachian Regional Commission,” stated Jeffrey Box, President and CEO of NEPA Alliance. The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) was established by an act of Congress in 1965 as a regional economic development agency that represents a partnership of federal, state, and local government. Its mission is to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in the 13 states of the Appalachian region. |
