Cartwright touts legislation to fund opening schools

The American Rescue Plan approved by the U.S. House on Feb. 27 would provide around $5 billion for kindergarten-through-12th-grade schools in Pennsylvania, U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright said Friday during a news conference.

Cartwright, D-8, Moosic, joined U.S. Rep. Susan Wild, D-7, Allentown, during a news conference on Zoom. They urged the Senate to approve the American Rescue Plan immediately to help open schools for in-person learning.

The legislation approved by the House would provide $130 billion to state education departments. It would also provide around $33 million for Head Start programs in Pennsylvania.

“Our local school leaders have been doing the best they can to create a productive learning experience for our kids while promoting safety in this pandemic, but it’s a tough task and it takes a lot of resources,” Cartwright said.

“It’s our job to make sure our local leaders have what they need to help return kids to class and make up for valuable learning time they have lost in the past year.”

The Senate on Thursday released its version of the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package.
