Rep. Cartwright Announces $5.2 Million in Federal Funds for Early Childhood Learning

Scranton, PA – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright (PA-08) announced that Scranton-Lackawanna Head Start received a competitive five-year grant award, with this year’s award totaling $5,290,611. These funds will be used for the continuation of high quality, comprehensive, early childhood education for children in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Rep. Cartwright has been working with Scranton-Lackawanna Head Start to help them secure this new competitive federal grant since January 2021, when the organization received the final disbursement from its previous grant. “Early education is vital to preparing our children for success later in life,” said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the House Appropriations Committee. “These funds are a direct investment in the future of our region and our country. I want to congratulate Jim Wansacz and Scranton-Lackawanna Head Start for receiving this award and for their dedication to enhancing the quality of life for children and families in Northeastern Pennsylvania.” “On behalf of SLHDA’s families we would like to thank Congressmen Cartwright on his support for our 1k plus children in our Early Learning Program,” said Jim Wansacz, Executive Director of Scranton Lackawanna Human Development Agency Inc. “This funding will provide our families with a high-quality Pre k education.” Head Start services are funded and overseen by The Office of Head Start (OHS), within the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), a division of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
