YMCA to offer free mental health, wellbeing programs to community

As mental health needs continue to grow in Northeast Pennsylvania, places known for encouraging physical fitness will also focus on the mind.

YMCA facilities for the Greater Scranton area, Wyoming Valley area, Carbondale, Pittston and Wayne County will now provide mental health education and support services with a partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-8, Moosic, announced

 

$1.85 million in federal Community Project Funding during a press conference at the Greater Scranton YMCA on Wednesday.

“We all want to see our communities thrive, and one way we can do that is by ensuring accessible and affordable mental and behavioral health support services for people of all ages,” the congressman said. “Nobody should let the fear of stigma attached to mental health and substance abuse disorders, or their inability to pay for care, prevent them from seeking assistance.”
